EMILIO AND THE COW

SYNOPSIS

Between his parents divorce and the comfort from a friend,
Emilio and the Enchanted Cow

As a result of the separation of his parents, Emilio creates an imaginary friend, the Cow, who will help him accept his new life.

At 8 years old, Emilio must face the mysteries of an unknown island, surely inhabited by terrible monsters. Or as you and I might see it: a new city and a school of full strangers. Luckily, someone understands Emilio’s situation a little more optimistically than he does, his great and only friend, the Cow. The cow does everything Emilio doesn’t dare to do because of his insecurity, shyness, and fear of rejection.
Although the cow provides him with options for survival in the mean new world he’s been thrown into, at the end of the day, Emilio will be the one who must take responsibility for himself, and to see his new world as a place offering new experiences, and new friends who will help him to overcome the challenges that face him.

About the Play

The play is focused on a young boy’s struggle with the recent separation of his parents. It explores his experience of this difficult situation: such as his fear of the unknown, his difficulty to make new emotional connections and his incapacity to come to terms with the reality of the situation. To survive, Emilio must make use of the only part of his most intimate self that remain intact: his imagination. And it’s in Emilio’s imagination that the friend who will guide him through his struggle -- the Cow – will come to life.
The play is performed with table puppets whose joints give them human-like movements. This realism allows the spectator to enter in the Emilio’s story and to experience his struggles and victories with him.
In contrast, the Cow, a product of Emilio’s imaginary world, is all quirky shapes and lively colors. The contrast between reality and Emilio’s imagination is further marked by the use of small daydream-like spaces also designed with the esthetics appropriate to the drawings and dreams of a young boy.
Throughout the play, the manipulators are completely hidden so as not to distract attention from Emilio’s story.
